Kyrgyzstan - Corridor - pavement

ADB has assisted the Kyrgyz Republic in rehabilitating 320 km of the 655 km Bishkek–Oshroad. Combined, all the development partners have assisted the government in rehabilitating over 539 km (about 82%) of the Bishkek–Osh road. However, due to funding limitations, there are still two sections which need urgent attention: Bishkek to Kara-Balta and Madaniyat to Jalal-Abad. The two non-rehabilitated sections are in very poor condition, with an international roughness index of above 7 and truck and bus average travel speed of below 60 km/h, which are unable to provide the required level of service and pose traffic hazards to road users and pedestrian traffic. Upgrading of the Bishkek–Osh road will connect the poorest population needing access to services, goods, and markets; enhance regional connectivity and improve safety for all road users. The project will improve the national and regional connectivity by reconstructing andrehabilitating an estimated 120 km of crucial road sections between Bishkek and Osh, andinclude road safety measures such as road signing, lane markings, street lighting, parkingarea, bus stops, crash barriers, and sidewalks. The Project is fully consistent with theGovernment’s priority in upgrading key corridors as stated in the National Strategy ofSustainable Development (2013–2017). The Project is also well aligned with ADB Strategy2020 and with the Country Partnership Strategy of Kyrgyz Republic (2013–2017) (CPS). Thepriority theme for the CPS is the development of a successful and stable democratic statethrough inclusive growth and the reduction of regional disparities. This theme also runs at thecore of the Project.
